Project Hail Mary is an awesome story! This book was sent to me by Doug Hardmnn—thank you, Doug! You’ve really reignited my love for science fiction.
I seriously couldn’t put this one down.
It was written by the same guy who wrote The Martian, which I also read early on in my sentence. I loved The Martian, and Project Hail Mary might be even better. Like The Martian, it’s full of humor, heart, and science—my favorite combo. Both stories follow a man stranded alone, relying on science and grit to survive.
No major spoilers, but here’s the gist:
A scientist wakes up alone on a spaceship in a distant galaxy with no memory and two dead crewmates. As his memories return, he realizes he’s on a mission to save humanity. Back on Earth, scientists discovered an alien organism slowly consuming the sun. With only a few decades left before disaster, our guy was sent to a nearby star system that wasn’t affected—to figure out what’s different and bring back a solution.
Along the way, he faces every kind of obstacle—starting with amnesia and a bunch of terrifying surprises. The book is packed with problem-solving, clever twists, and even a surprising friendship. The author clearly did his research—the science feels believable, grounded, and imaginative.
Normally I write longer reports, but I don’t want to give anything away. This book is full of surprises, and that’s what makes it so much fun. It’s a quick, smart, and humorous read. Highly recommended!
