Another beautiful day here in Cumberland, Maryland. The sun is shining, the temperature is around 57 degrees, and for a moment it almost makes me forget I’m in prison. As I get closer to “the door” (as we say in here), I’ve noticed my counting habits getting more intense. I have 3 weeks and 2 days left. Two commissary days left. I even took inventory of my lockers to see what food will last me to the finish line. I have just enough protein shakes for one a day—perfect. I’ve got three more cycles of each of my daily workouts. And I only have 10 RDAP days left out of the remaining three weeks.
The schedule is lighter because this week we get Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off for Thanksgiving. Then there’s one full week of class, and after that only three days before my RDAP graduation on Thursday. Then that’s it. I’m done. RDAP complete, and I get nine months off my sentence.
I wrapped up my last big assignment this week: writing a release plan for the next two years of my life. Surprisingly, it was one assignment I actually enjoyed. It forced me to think deeply about what I want to accomplish and helped me set real goals. I laid out plans to start a few businesses and look for funding to restart CoinNinja with the DropBit app. I set housing goals, relationship goals, and even created some very achievable retirement goals. It felt good to map out a future.
The remaining RDAP days should be pretty easygoing. Even though the camp is technically in Maryland, it’s on this thin strip wedged between parts of West Virginia, and the staff culture is definitely more West Virginia than Maryland. That’s why for the next two weeks at least two RDAP counselors are taking off to go hunting. Hunting isn’t really my thing, but around here it’s huge—kids even get school days off for it. So let them have their fun; I’m happy to take the slower pace for my last stretch of RDAP.
Camp News:
The SHU is getting crowded again. Five people got called to the guard station last week and were taken to the SHU for suspicion of bringing in contraband. They supposedly caught them on camera bringing in packages. One of the guys was someone I had been trying to help with his drug problems—and he was also the guy I paid to do my laundry. Looks like I’ll be doing my own laundry for the rest of my time here. First-world prison problems, I know. I’m honestly sad I won’t get to see him again before I leave.
Another eight people were taken to the SHU the other night. Apparently the maintenance guy walked past the windows, saw a bunch of people on phones, took pictures, and handed them to the guards. I didn’t know most of them.
Workout News:
Nothing new except that I’m really trying to blast through these last three weeks. I’m aiming for 1,200 push-ups on my final Saturday here—not bad considering I started at 800. I’m still stuck at six pull-ups, but I’m hoping to hit my goal of 10 before I go. I stopped fasting on Sundays for a while because I needed the protein for muscle building, but I think I’ll restart for the last four Sundays—including today.
That’s all I’ve got this week. Next week I’ll let you know what Thanksgiving is like in prison.Stay legal and safe out there,
Larry
