BR: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

I just finished reading The Catcher in the Rye, and it was definitely an interesting experience. Unlike most novels, it doesn’t really have a traditional climax or story arc. Instead, it feels like being inside the mind of Holden Caulfield, a young man trying to deal with the confusion and pain in his life. The book reminded me a lot of the random thoughts I used to have as a teenager going through puberty, when your mind jumps one way and then another, never really settling down.

The main thing that drives Holden’s story is the trauma of losing his younger brother, Allie. He’s angry, sad, and lost, and he doesn’t know who he can trust. That really hit me personally, because I know what it feels like to carry trauma. I lost my best friend when I was about 28, and then another close friend a couple years later. On top of that, I’ve been betrayed by my family—especially my brother—and by my wife. Those kinds of experiences leave you feeling like Holden: cut off, unsure, and constantly questioning whether anyone is really there for you. Your mind spins in different directions, sometimes hopeful, sometimes hopeless.

Reading this book through that lens gave me a deeper appreciation for what Salinger was doing. Holden isn’t supposed to be a traditional hero—he’s a reflection of what it feels like to be broken and drifting, to not know where you belong, or who you can rely on. That’s what makes this book powerful even without a neat resolution. It’s less about plot and more about capturing the feeling of being lost in your own head.

Overall, I’d say The Catcher in the Rye is a strange but meaningful read. It’s not the type of story I usually go for, since I like a strong arc, but I can’t deny how real it felt. It made me reflect on my own losses and betrayals, and in that way it connected with me in a very personal way. I’d give this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
