This week brought an unexpected — and honestly, pretty frustrating — change. Out of nowhere, the counselor called me in and told me I was being moved to Wing 1. When I asked why, she just gave the usual vague answer: “I’m just trying to mix things up.” Translation: I’m not going to tell you the real reason.
But I’ve got a pretty good guess.
One of my cube mates had been complaining nonstop for weeks. He didn’t like the cube, didn’t like how loud it was, didn’t like how we joked around. Instead of dealing with it directly, he vented to everyone else on the compound like he was campaigning for sympathy. We told him straight up — if you don’t like the cube, go find another one. He kept saying he was going to move but always had an excuse.
So I started asking him every day: “Is today the day you’re switching?” At first it was lighthearted, but I could tell it started getting under his skin. He wasn’t laughing. I’m guessing he didn’t like the pressure — or maybe he just didn’t like me. Either way, he went to the counselor, and ten minutes after their little chat, she called me in and said I was being moved. No warning. No reason. Just packed up and out.
And not just to any wing — she sent me to Wing 1. The bottom floor. I call it the dungeon because it’s dark and gloomy and the energy is totally different. Down here, it’s quiet in a bad way. People keep to themselves. The vibe is heavy. It’s like the place where motivation goes to die.
It’s been a tough adjustment. I really liked my old cube in Wing 3. Up there, there was a real sense of camaraderie. Guys joked around, helped each other out, kept the mood light. I miss that already.Still, I’m making the best of it. I go upstairs a few times a day to visit my old crew and hang out. I’m basically earning a stair-stepper badge from all the back-and-forth. Small silver lining, I guess.
Workout Update:This weekend I focused more on cross-training. I mixed in a ton of push-ups, sit-ups, and burpees — and even though my runs didn’t go all that well, I still managed to rack up 10 miles for the week. Not my strongest running week, but the strength work made up for it.
Stay safe and legal out there.
